What Bangkok offers
Bangkok is a genuine world city — temples like Wat Arun and the Grand Palace sit a short taxi ride from rooftop bars, street-food stalls and some of the best-value shopping in Southeast Asia. It rewards even a short stay because so much is packed into a compact, well-connected centre; the BTS Skytrain and MRT make getting between neighbourhoods easy without much planning. The trade-off is that Bangkok is a big, humid, occasionally chaotic city, not a place to switch off completely. If your holiday goal is doing nothing on a beach, Bangkok on its own won't deliver that — pair it with Phuket, or head straight to the coast instead.
What Phuket offers
Phuket is Thailand's most developed beach destination, with resort areas ranging from the lively strip at Patong to the quieter, more upscale stretches around Kamala, Bang Tao and Rawai. It's built for exactly the holiday Bangkok isn't — pool days, beach time, snorkelling and diving trips to the surrounding islands, and evenings that don't require much planning. What Phuket doesn't offer is much cultural depth on the island itself — day trips to Phang Nga Bay or the Phi Phi Islands cover some of that, but if temples and city life matter to you as much as the beach, you'll want at least a few nights in Bangkok as well.
Getting there from the UK — flights and journey times
Bangkok has the stronger direct flight position today. Thai Airways and EVA Air both operate daily non-stop services from London Heathrow to Bangkok, taking roughly 11 hours 25 minutes to 11 hours 55 minutes depending on the exact flight and time of year.
Phuket's direct option is brand new and not yet flying. Virgin Atlantic launches the first-ever non-stop London–Phuket service on 18 October 2026, running three times a week (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday outbound) on a Boeing 787-9, with an outbound flight time of around 12 hours 10 minutes and roughly 13 hours 40 minutes on the return leg. Until that route starts, reaching Phuket directly from the UK means routing via Bangkok, or flying one-stop with carriers such as British Airways (codeshare via Doha, around 14 hours total) or Qatar Airways.

Best time to visit Bangkok or Phuket
Cool season — roughly November to February — is the strongest window for both destinations. Bangkok sits around 24°C with low humidity, ideal for walking and sightseeing, while Phuket is in its dry season with calm seas, consistent sunshine and temperatures around 30°C. This overlap is exactly why a combined Bangkok-and-Phuket trip works best if you can travel between November and February.

Getting between Bangkok and Phuket
If you're doing both, don't overthink this part — flying is almost always the right call. Several airlines run the route multiple times daily, and the price difference against overland travel rarely justifies losing the best part of a day of your holiday.

Entry requirements for UK travellers in 2026
This is the section that most other Bangkok-or-Phuket guides online haven't updated yet, and it matters. According to GOV.UK's Thailand travel advice, from 15 September 2026, British passport holders entering Thailand under the visa exemption scheme are granted a 30-day stay on arrival, down from the 60 days that had applied since July 2024. One extension is available at a Thai immigration office, which can bring the total stay for a single entry to around 60 days. If you entered Thailand before 15 September 2026, GOV.UK confirms you keep the stay length you were originally granted — this change only affects arrivals from that date onward.
A few other entry points are worth checking before you fly:
- TDAC digital arrival card. Mandatory for every visitor since 1 May 2025. It's free, completed online, and must be submitted within 3 days before you arrive.
- Passport validity. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least one blank page.
- Proof of funds. Thai authorities can ask for evidence of at least 10,000 baht per person (or 20,000 baht per family) plus onward or return travel — rarely checked for UK travellers with a return flight booked, but worth having in mind.
Because this rule is only days old at the time of writing, treat any older guide that quotes "60 days" as out of date, and always check GOV.UK directly if you're booking close to your travel dates.
