Zimbabwe

One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World: 1,708 metres of waterfalls plunging 108 metres into the Batoka Gorge — sunset river cruises, guided walks through the rainforest, and knife-edge bridge views of the full curtain.

Zimbabwe's largest game reserve with over 40,000 elephants and well-established Big Five populations — dawn game drives when the bush is golden reconnect diaspora families with the Zimbabwe of childhood.

The largest stone structures in sub-Saharan Africa, built between the 11th and 15th centuries — the Great Enclosure's eleven-metre walls and the Hill Complex are a powerful anchor to Zimbabwean history and identity.

Wide jacaranda-lined avenues, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe's contemporary African art, and one of southern Africa's largest open-air markets — Harare rewards diaspora visitors and first-timers alike.

A landscape of ancient granite boulders near Bulawayo, home to one of the world's highest concentrations of San rock art and rare black and white rhino — track rhino on foot with expert rangers.

Travel Essentials

Visa & Entry
UK passport holders require a visa for Zimbabwe. The KAZA Univisa (USD 50, 30 days) covers Zimbabwe and Zambia and is available on arrival at Victoria Falls Airport and selected crossings. An e-Visa (single entry, USD 55) can be applied for before travel at evisa.gov.zw. Always verify current requirements at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/zimbabwe.

Money & Currency
USD is the most practical currency to carry for Zimbabwe — widely accepted at hotels, lodges, restaurants, and tourist sites. The Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) was introduced in April 2024 as the local currency; tourist acceptance can vary. Carry sufficient USD cash, especially outside major cities where ATMs can be unreliable. EcoCash mobile money is widely used locally for everyday transactions.

Language
Zimbabwe has 16 official languages. Shona and Ndebele are the two most widely spoken, alongside English which is used in government, business, and tourism. For UK-based diaspora families, English makes communication entirely straightforward, while the warmth of local welcome in Shona and Ndebele is always appreciated.

Best Time to Visit
May to October (dry season) is the best window for wildlife at Hwange and for Victoria Falls — clear skies, cooler temperatures, and excellent game viewing. The festive season (December to January) is the most popular window for diaspora families; book flights many months ahead as demand is intense over Christmas and New Year.

Health & Safety
Malaria is present in parts of Zimbabwe, particularly the Zambezi Valley and lower-lying areas — anti-malarial prophylaxis is recommended for travel outside Harare and Bulawayo. Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country. Consult your GP at least six weeks before departure. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation is strongly recommended.

Approximately 17 to 19 hours total connecting time — there are no direct flights from the UK to Zimbabwe. The best routings are via Johannesburg (South African Airways/British Airways, then a 1-hour onward leg), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines, ~16–17 hours), or Dubai (Emirates, ~19 hours). Travel Orbit monitors all routes and fares to find the best combination for your itinerary.
May to October (the dry season) is the best window for wildlife viewing at Hwange National Park and for walking safaris near Victoria Falls. December to January (the festive season) is the most popular window for UK-based diaspora families returning home — book flights well in advance as demand is high and fares rise steeply over Christmas.
US Dollars (USD) are the most practical currency to carry — USD is widely accepted at hotels, lodges, supermarkets, and tourist sites. The Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) was introduced in April 2024 as the local currency. We recommend verifying the current currency position with the owner or a recent visitor before travel, as acceptance can vary.
Zimbabwe is generally welcoming and safe for tourists. Standard precautions apply — stay aware in urban areas and follow local advice. The country is a well-established destination for UK diaspora families returning home. Always check the latest UK government foreign travel advice at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/zimbabwe before you travel.
Flight prices to Zimbabwe vary by season, booking lead time, and chosen routing. Fares tend to be lower when booked several months in advance and outside the peak festive window (December to January). Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, Emirates via Dubai, and Kenya Airways via Nairobi are the main UK-to-Harare routings. Contact Travel Orbit for a personalised fare quote — we search across all major routings to find the best combination of price, timing, and baggage allowance for your family.
The green season (November to April) generally offers lower fares as overall demand is lower than the dry-season peak. Avoid booking over December and January if budget is the priority — the festive diaspora window is the most expensive period for Zimbabwe flights. Booking eight or more weeks in advance significantly increases the chance of securing better fares, whatever the season.
There are no direct flights from the UK to Zimbabwe. The best connecting options are Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Ababa), Emirates (via Dubai), Kenya Airways (via Nairobi), and Qatar Airways (via Doha). Travel Orbit compares all routings to find the most competitive and convenient fare for your itinerary.
