Egypt

The last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World — stand at the base of the Great Pyramid, 138 metres of ancient ambition, then meet the enigmatic Sphinx on the Giza plateau.

Sixty-three royal tombs on the West Bank and the colossal Hypostyle Hall at Karnak — Luxor is the greatest open-air museum in the world.

Sail the Nile aboard a river vessel, stopping at the Edfu and Kom Ombo temples — one of travel's most timeless experiences.

Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada sit above world-class reefs. Ras Mohammed National Park offers over forty metres of visibility in warm, clear water.

Lose yourself in the medieval alleyways of a UNESCO World Heritage city — from Al-Azhar Mosque (founded 970 CE) to the labyrinthine Khan el-Khalili bazaar.

Travel Essentials

Visa & Entry
UK passport holders need a visa for Egypt. You can apply for the Egyptian e-Visa online before travel (around USD 25), which avoids the airport queue and allows more processing time, or buy a visa-on-arrival sticker at major airports including Cairo, Hurghada, and Sharm El Sheikh. Both permit a single entry and a stay of up to 30 days; multi-entry options are available via the e-Visa system. Always verify current requirements at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt before travel, as rules change without notice.

Money & Currency
Egypt's currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). Recent exchange-rate movements have made Egypt notably good value for UK visitors — accommodation, food, site entry, and transport are all cheaper than UK equivalents. ATMs are widely available in Cairo, Luxor, and the Red Sea resorts and accept international Visa and Mastercard. Hotels and tourist shops take cards, but keep local cash for site entrance fees, local restaurants, and tips, which are culturally expected throughout the service sector.

Language
Arabic is Egypt's official language, spoken in the distinctive Egyptian dialect that is widely understood across the Arab world. English is broadly used in the tourism sector — at hotels, historic sites, Red Sea resorts, and with guides and drivers — so UK visitors communicate easily. A few courteous Arabic phrases (shukran for thank you, salam for peace) are always warmly received and add to the experience.

Best Time to Visit
October to April is the ideal window for the historic sites — Cairo, Giza, Luxor, and Aswan enjoy comfortable mid-twenties temperatures. Summer (June to August) is intensely hot inland, regularly exceeding 40°C, which makes touring temples genuinely taxing. The Red Sea resorts (Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada) are pleasant year-round, with October to April the peak season for ideal diving conditions and comfortable beach weather. UK half-term and Christmas holidays fall within the best window.

Getting Around
Domestic EgyptAir flights are the standard way to reach Luxor and Aswan from Cairo — frequent and modestly priced. A Luxor–Aswan Nile cruise covers the Upper Egypt temples over three to seven days. In Cairo, the metro is fast and avoids the city's heavy traffic; allow sixty to ninety minutes for the airport transfer by road. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem operate in Cairo. Travel Orbit arranges transfers, guides, and cruises as part of your itinerary.

Health & Safety
No specific vaccination is required for entry from the UK beyond routine vaccinations, and malaria risk is very low. Stomach upsets are common, so drink only bottled water, avoid ice of uncertain origin, and be selective with street food. The Egyptian sun at historic sites is extremely strong — sun protection and hydration are essential, and heat exhaustion is a real risk in summer. Some regions are advised against travel; always check gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt and arrange travel insurance.

UK passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival at major Egyptian airports (Cairo, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada) for approximately USD 25, or apply for an e-Visa online before travel. Visa requirements and fees can change without notice — always verify at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt before you book.
Approximately four hours fifty minutes direct from London Heathrow to Cairo (CAI) with British Airways. Charter services to Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada from regional UK airports (Manchester, Birmingham, Gatwick) take a similar time. Connecting services via the Gulf take nine to twelve hours.
October to April is the ideal window for Cairo, the Pyramids, Luxor, and Aswan — comfortable temperatures of 18–28°C. June to August is intensely hot inland (40°C+). The Red Sea resorts (Sharm, Hurghada) are popular year-round, with November to April being the peak diving and beach season.
Egypt is one of the most visited destinations in the world and its main tourist sites (Cairo, Luxor, the Red Sea resorts) are well-established and well-regulated. Normal travel precautions apply. Always check the latest UK government foreign travel advice at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt before you travel.
The Egyptian Pound (EGP). ATMs are widely available in Cairo, Luxor, and the Red Sea resorts. Major credit and debit cards are accepted at hotels and restaurants, but carry local cash for site entrance fees, markets, and tips — tipping is culturally important in Egypt's service sector.
Flight prices to Egypt depend on your destination, departure airport, and time of year. British Airways operates non-stop Heathrow to Cairo (CAI); charter and scheduled services from UK regional airports (Manchester, Birmingham, Gatwick) serve Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) and Hurghada (HRG) seasonally. Travel Orbit can also combine your flights with an ATOL-protected Egypt holiday package — speak to us for a personalised fare and package quote.
Shoulder seasons in spring (March to April) and autumn (October to November) can offer lower fares to Egypt than peak periods. Summer (June to August) is very hot inland, which reduces demand for Cairo and Luxor — fares may be lower but sightseeing is challenging. October to April is peak for the Red Sea resorts (Sharm, Hurghada), so book Red Sea flights early for that window. Ramadan timing affects flight and hotel demand each year; the Christmas and New Year period also drives prices higher.
British Airways operates non-stop services from London Heathrow to Cairo (CAI). EgyptAir, Wizz Air, and easyJet serve Egypt seasonally from various UK airports, including Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham, particularly to Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) and Hurghada (HRG). Connecting options via Emirates (Dubai), Qatar Airways (Doha), and Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) are available year-round. Travel Orbit compares all options and can combine flights with ATOL-protected holiday packages.
