Nigeria

One of Africa's largest private galleries (8,000+ works of Yoruba textiles and contemporary art) beside a forest canopy walkway — Lagos's finest cultural pairing on the Lekki peninsula.

Nigeria's planned capital blends green parkland with dramatic granite monoliths — Zuma Rock rises 725 metres above the Abuja skyline and is visible for miles across the Federal Capital Territory.

The colonial slave port west of Lagos traces the transatlantic slave trade through its Point of No Return, Good King James Museum, and preserved slave route — a moving and historically significant day trip from Lagos.

Nigeria's most biodiverse forest reserve in Calabar supports rare drills, Cross River gorillas, and forest elephants in one of West Africa's last pristine rainforest habitats.

Held each December, the Calabar Carnival draws over two million visitors with elaborate floats, live performances, and cultural displays from across Nigeria — one of Africa's most spectacular annual events.

Travel Essentials

Visa & Entry
UK passport holders require a visa for Nigeria. The most convenient route is the Nigerian e-Visa, applied for online through the Nigeria Immigration Service portal before departure (a visa-on-arrival pre-approval option also exists). The tourist visa permits a single entry and a stay of up to 30 days. Processing times can be unpredictable — apply at least three to four weeks ahead. Always verify current requirements at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/nigeria before travel, as rules change without notice.

Money & Currency
Nigeria's currency is the Nigerian Naira (NGN). The rate against the pound has fluctuated significantly, so monitor it in the weeks before travel to find a favourable window. ATMs dispensing Naira are available in Lagos and Abuja, though reliability varies — carry some Naira in cash. USD and GBP are widely accepted by hotels and larger businesses in Lagos, but locally offered exchange rates may not be favourable. Ride-hailing apps and most vendors prefer cash for smaller amounts.

Language
English is Nigeria's official language, used throughout government, business, education, and tourism, so communication is straightforward for UK visitors. Alongside it, more than 250 languages are spoken — Hausa in the north, Yoruba in the south-west, and Igbo in the south-east are the three most widely used. Nigerian Pidgin is a vibrant everyday lingua franca heard across markets, music, and casual conversation nationwide.

Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to March is the most comfortable window for Lagos, Abuja, and family visits — humidity is lower and the cooling harmattan wind from the Sahara softens the evenings. The main rains run April to July with a second wet spell to October. December and January are peak diaspora season, when flights fill quickly and fares rise steeply, so book four to six months ahead for festive travel.

Getting Around
Lagos traffic is legendary — gridlock on major roads can last hours, especially on Friday evenings, so factor travel time generously into any itinerary. Ride-hailing apps (Bolt and Uber operate in Lagos and Abuja) are safer and more transparent than unmetered taxis. Domestic flights between Lagos and Abuja run frequently with Air Peace and others, making it easy to combine the two cities. Travel Orbit can pre-arrange airport transfers and in-country transport.

Health & Safety
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry to Nigeria — carry your International Certificate of Vaccination. Malaria is present throughout the country, including Lagos and Abuja, so anti-malarial prophylaxis is recommended for all travel. Drink bottled water throughout your stay, as urban tap water is not reliable. Consult your GP or a travel health clinic four to six weeks before departure, and arrange comprehensive travel insurance covering emergency medical care.

The main rains season (August to October) typically offers the lowest fares for Nigeria, as overall demand dips. The dry season (November to March) is peak for diaspora family visits and fares rise accordingly, especially over Christmas and New Year. Booking eight or more weeks ahead and avoiding school holiday peaks gives the best chance of securing competitive fares.

Travel Orbit sources fares across all these options and advises on the best routing for your departure point and budget.
