Kenya

Two million wildebeest cross the Mara July to October; year-round lion, leopard, cheetah, and elephant on dawn game drives.

A genuine safari 8km from the city skyline, plus the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage — a guaranteed highlight for families.

Powdery white sand and warm, reef-sheltered turquoise water 50km south of Mombasa — among Africa's best beaches.

Over a million lesser flamingoes turn the Rift Valley lake pink; also prime white rhino and Rothschild's giraffe country.

Home to the world's last two northern white rhinos under round-the-clock guard, plus black rhino, lion, and chimpanzee.

Travel Essentials

Visa & Entry
UK passport holders must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arriving in Kenya. Apply online via the official Kenya eCitizen portal — the fee is USD 30 per person for a single-entry ETA valid for 90 days from date of issue. Processing typically takes three to five working days, and your approved ETA is emailed as a QR code to present at the port of entry. Always verify current requirements and fees at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/kenya before you travel, as these can change without notice.

Money & Currency
Kenya's currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). ATMs are plentiful in Nairobi and Mombasa, and major credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets. M-Pesa — Kenya's pioneering mobile money platform — is accepted everywhere from market stalls and taxi fares to utilities and supermarkets, making it the most practical payment method once you are in-country. Carry some cash for smaller vendors and rural areas outside the main hubs.

Language
Kenya has two official languages: Swahili (Kiswahili) and English. English is used across government, business, education, and tourism, so communication is straightforward for UK visitors. Swahili is the everyday lingua franca — a handful of courteous phrases (jambo for hello, asante for thank you, karibu for welcome) go a long way and are always warmly received.

Best Time to Visit
July to October is the prime window for the Maasai Mara's Great Migration wildebeest river crossing — the world's greatest wildlife spectacle. The long dry season from June to October also gives the most reliable beach weather for the coast (Diani Beach, Mombasa). January to March is excellent for game viewing with shorter grass and fewer visitors. Avoid the long rains in April and May for beach trips, though Nairobi remains comfortable year-round at altitude.

Getting Around
Domestic flights are the fastest way to reach the Maasai Mara — charter and scheduled services from Wilson Airport or JKIA's domestic terminal to Mara airstrips such as Ol Kiombo take around 45 minutes. The SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) links Nairobi to Mombasa in roughly four hours at a fraction of the driving cost. For Nairobi city transfers, Uber and Little Cab (a local ride-hailing app) are safe and reliable. Travel Orbit can pre-arrange airport transfers and safari transfers for your full itinerary.

Health & Safety
Malaria is present throughout Kenya, including Nairobi, though the risk in the highland capital (above 1,500 m) is very low. The Maasai Mara and the coast are higher-risk zones — anti-malarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended for travel to those areas. Consult your GP or a travel health clinic at least four to six weeks before departure; routine vaccinations (hepatitis A, typhoid) are generally advised. Comprehensive travel insurance covering emergency medical evacuation is essential and strongly recommended.

Yes. UK passport holders apply online for the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) via the official Kenya eCitizen portal before travel — USD 30 per person, single entry, valid for ninety days. Please note that visa requirements and fees change without notice; you must verify the current position before travel via the official UK government foreign travel advice for Kenya at gov.uk.
Roughly eight to nine hours direct from London Heathrow to Nairobi (NBO) with Kenya Airways or British Airways — among the shortest hauls to sub-Saharan Africa. Connecting routings via the Gulf (Qatar Airways, Emirates) or Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) take around twelve to fifteen hours and serve UK airports outside London.

Kenya is a well-established destination for diaspora and family visitors, and normal travel precautions apply. As guidance can change, always check the latest UK government foreign travel advice for Kenya at gov.uk before you travel and follow local advice while there.
The Kenyan Shilling (KES). Major credit cards are widely accepted in Nairobi and Mombasa hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets, but carry cash outside the main hubs. M-Pesa mobile money is ubiquitous across the country — from market stalls to taxi fares.
Fares vary by season, airline, and booking lead time. Kenya Airways and British Airways both operate non-stop London Heathrow to Nairobi (NBO) services — among the most competitive direct fares to sub-Saharan Africa. The Great Migration peak window (July to October) and the UK Christmas holiday period see higher demand and fares. Contact Travel Orbit for a personalised fare quote; we compare direct and connecting options to find the best available fare for your dates.
The long rains (April to May) and the low season between the migration peak and December typically offer softer fares. The Great Migration window (July to October) and the December festive period are peak for both demand and pricing. Booking eight or more weeks ahead, and avoiding UK school holiday peaks, improves your chances of competitive fares. January and February can also offer good value with reliable weather in Nairobi.
Kenya Airways and British Airways both operate non-stop services from London Heathrow to Nairobi (NBO). For UK regional airports, Qatar Airways (via Doha), Emirates (via Dubai), and Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Ababa) provide connecting services. Travel Orbit sources fares across all options and advises on the best routing for your departure point and itinerary.
