Ghana

The Door of No Return — the most significant site of the transatlantic slave trade in West Africa. A UNESCO-listed castle that no diaspora visitor should miss.

Walk 330 metres of suspended canopy walkway forty metres above one of West Africa's last great tropical rainforests — an unforgettable natural experience near Cape Coast.

Ghana's vibrant capital: the National Museum's heritage collections, the Kente and Adinkra markets of Arts Centre, and the afrobeats nightlife of Osu's Oxford Street strip.

Ghana's largest wildlife reserve in the north — savannah elephants, antelopes, and over 300 bird species in a landscape that surprises first-time visitors to West Africa.

The cultural heart of Ghana: the vast Kejetia Market, the Manhyia Palace museum, and the living Ashanti royal tradition centred on the Golden Stool.

Travel Essentials

Visa & Entry
UK passport holders require a visa for Ghana. The usual route is the Ghana e-Visa, applied for online through the official Ghana Immigration Service portal before travel — confirm the current process, fees, and validity on the portal at the time of application. Apply at least two to three weeks ahead and carry a printed or digital copy of your approval for immigration at Kotoka. Always verify current requirements at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ghana before travel, as rules change without notice.

Money & Currency
Ghana's currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). ATMs are available in Accra, Kumasi, and major towns, with Visa and Mastercard generally accepted at the more established machines, though smaller ATMs may not take international cards reliably. Cards work in larger hotels and restaurants in Accra, but cash is essential for markets and travel outside the capital. MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) is ubiquitous and by far the most seamless way to pay in-country and handle family contributions.

Language
English is Ghana's official language, used across government, business, education, and tourism, so UK visitors will find communication easy. Alongside English, around eighty local languages are spoken — Akan (Twi and Fante) is the most widely used, followed by Ewe and Ga. A warm greeting in Twi (akwaaba, meaning welcome) is always appreciated and reflects Ghana's genuine welcome to the global diaspora.

Best Time to Visit
The dry season from October to April is the best window, with low-to-mid thirties temperatures and minimal rainfall — ideal for the heritage trail at Cape Coast and Kakum. The harmattan wind brings a dry, dusty haze in December and January but makes the air feel cooler. The festive Detty December period is peak diaspora season, when flights and hotels fill months ahead, so January to March often offers the ideal balance of weather, price, and a calmer pace.

Getting Around
Most diaspora visits centre on Accra, with day trips and overnight stops along the coast. The drive from Accra to Cape Coast takes around three to three and a half hours on the N1 coast road, while Kumasi is four to five hours inland; domestic flights operate when available. Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and Uber serve Accra and are safer than unmetered taxis. Travel Orbit can arrange private airport transfers and in-country ground transport as part of your package.

Health & Safety
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry to Ghana — carry your International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card), as it is checked at the port of entry, and have the jab at least ten days before departure. Malaria is present throughout the country, including Accra, so anti-malarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Drink only bottled or treated water. Consult your GP or a travel clinic four to six weeks before you travel, and arrange comprehensive travel insurance.
