Flying from the UK to Zimbabwe is a journey most Zimbabweans in the diaspora know well — but that doesn't mean it gets any simpler. Routes change, fares fluctuate, and the baggage situation alone can turn a straightforward trip into a logistics puzzle. This guide covers everything you need: the airlines, the routing options, what to know about baggage if you're carrying goods home, and when to book to get the best fare.
Routes from London and Manchester to Harare
There are no fully direct flights from the UK to Zimbabwe. Every route involves at least one stop — but the stopover city makes a real difference to your total journey time, comfort, and price.
Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is one of the most popular options for UK Zimbabweans. Flights from London Heathrow connect through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport before continuing to Harare's Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. Total journey time is typically 14–16 hours including the stopover. Ethiopian has good connections and competitive fares, and their hub in Addis Ababa is well set up for transit passengers.
Emirates and flydubai via Dubai are also widely used, particularly for travellers from the Midlands or the North who have better access to Manchester Airport than Heathrow. Emirates offers a premium service with generous baggage allowances, while flydubai is their lower-cost arm on some routes. Via Dubai, the total journey to Harare is typically 13–16 hours depending on the connection time.
Kenya Airways via Nairobi provides a solid option with connections through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Flying time London to Nairobi is around 8.5 hours, with Nairobi to Harare typically around 2.5 hours. Kenya Airways is particularly popular with travellers who want a connection through an African hub.
KLM via Amsterdam offers a European connection option. Flights depart Amsterdam Schiphol to Harare, and with a short hop from London to Amsterdam, total travel time is typically around 14–16 hours. KLM is well regarded for reliability and baggage handling.
Qatar Airways via Doha is another strong option, particularly for premium-cabin travellers. Hamad International Airport in Doha is one of the world's best-connected transit hubs, and Qatar's service to Harare is consistent. Journey time is typically 13–16 hours.
Flights to Bulawayo: Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport
Travellers heading to Bulawayo have fewer direct options than those going to Harare. Most routes connect in Johannesburg or Harare, with a short onward flight to Bulawayo Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport. South African Airways, Fastjet, and Zimbabwe's domestic carriers have historically served this route, though availability and schedules change. If Bulawayo is your destination, we recommend enquiring directly — the right routing can save you significant time and cost.
Baggage for VFR Travellers: Carrying Goods Home
Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) travel to Zimbabwe has one consistent feature: people carry things home. Whether it's food, clothing, electronics, medicines, or personal effects for family — the baggage allowance matters as much as the fare.
Standard economy baggage allowances vary significantly by airline:
- Emirates/flydubai: Economy typically includes 30kg checked allowance on many African routes — one of the more generous offerings.
- Ethiopian Airlines: Economy allowances vary by fare class, typically 23–30kg. Check when booking.
- Kenya Airways: Typically 23kg economy, with additional pieces available for purchase.
- KLM: Economy allowances depend on fare class; Light fares may include only cabin baggage, so read the fine print.
- Qatar Airways: Economy class typically includes 23–30kg depending on the route and fare.
Excess baggage rates can be steep if bought at the airport — typically £40–£80 per additional 5kg or piece, depending on the airline and route. Buying additional baggage at booking is nearly always cheaper. If you're travelling with a significant amount of goods, it's worth a conversation with us before booking: we can identify which airline's standard allowance best fits your needs and check whether a higher-class ticket makes financial sense when the baggage cost is factored in.
One practical note: Zimbabwe's customs regulations apply to what you bring in. Formal goods above personal-use thresholds may attract duties. This is something to be aware of independently of the airline baggage question.
Best Time to Book: When to Lock In Your Fare
Timing matters. Fares on UK–Zimbabwe routes follow predictable patterns that experienced travellers learn to work with.
Zimbabwe's dry season (May to October) is the most popular time to travel. The weather is clear and cool, wildlife viewing is at its best, and school holidays in both the UK and Zimbabwe tend to fall in this window. This is peak season — expect higher fares and earlier sellouts on preferred routings. For this period, booking 8–12 weeks ahead gives you the best combination of route availability and fare.
December is consistently the most expensive period of the year for UK–Zimbabwe flights. Christmas and New Year travel, combined with Zimbabwean school holidays and the widespread tradition of going home for the festive season, drives fares up sharply. If you're travelling in December, booking 10–14 weeks ahead (from September) is strongly advisable — and flexibility on dates by even 2–3 days can make a material difference to the fare.
January to March and the rainy season months (November to April) are generally lower-demand periods. Fares are more competitive, and last-minute bookings are more viable than in peak season. That said, "off-peak" on the UK–Zimbabwe route is relative — it's never as cheap as short-haul European travel.
Fare alerts and monitoring can help, but given the limited number of airlines and routes serving Zimbabwe, the best approach is to book as soon as your dates are confirmed. Prices on this route are not typically rewarded by waiting — the inventory is too constrained.
A Note on Flexibility
Many diaspora travellers book around events they can't fully predict: a funeral, a wedding, a family emergency. We understand this. We work to find routings with reasonable change and cancellation terms, and we can advise on which airlines and fare classes give you the most flexibility if your plans might shift.
