The honest answer to "3★, 4★ or 5★ Umrah?" is that star rating is the wrong thing to decide on first. Every tier gets you the same flights, the same visa assistance and the same transfers; what you are really buying with each extra star is a better hotel and, more importantly, a shorter walk to the Haram. On our current packages from London Heathrow, a 7-night Umrah costs from £590 per person at 3★, £795 at 4★ and £950 at 5★, based on four sharing. For fit adults on a budget, 3★ is usually the right call. For elderly parents, young children or summer travel, pay for proximity before you pay for luxury.

What actually changes between 3★, 4★ and 5★ Umrah?
Less than most people assume, and in one specific place.
| Same at every tier | Changes with the tier | |
|---|---|---|
| Flights | Return flights from London Heathrow | — |
| Visa | Visa assistance for every pilgrim | — |
| Transfers | Private ground transfers | — |
| Board | Bed and breakfast | — |
| Hotel | — | Standard of rooms, lobbies, lifts and facilities |
| Location | — | Walking distance to Masjid al-Haram in Makkah |
| Price | — | From £590, £795 or £950 per person for 7 nights |
That last row is the one to understand. In Makkah, the hotels closest to the Haram command the highest prices because demand for them never lets up, and you will make the walk several times a day — often in heat, often in crowds, and at Fajr in the dark. A shorter walk is not a luxury on an Umrah trip. It shapes how much of your time you actually spend in the mosque rather than getting to it.
Our 3★, 4★ and 5★ Umrah packages compared
These are real, bookable packages, not illustrative examples.
| Tier | 7-night price per person | Longer stays | Makkah hotel | Madinah hotel | Makkah walk to the Haram, as listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3★ | From £590 | — | Emaar Andalusia, Emaar Al Khalil | Emaar Taibah, Al Mokhtara International | Under 5 to 10 minutes, depending on package |
| 4★ | From £795 | 9 and 10 nights, from £875 | Voco Makkah | Saja Al Madinah | Doorstep to 10 minutes, depending on package |
| 5★ | From £950 | 8 and 10 nights, from £1,050 | Jabal Omar Marriott, Address Jabal Omar | Emaar Royal | Doorstep to under 5 minutes, depending on package |
Two points worth being straight about. First, prices are per person based on four people sharing a room — the UK market standard. A couple in a twin room pays more per person, because the room cost is split between fewer people. Second, walking times are the figures listed on each package and can vary between packages at the same hotel, so treat them as a guide and confirm the distance for your specific room when you ask for a quote. In Madinah, every hotel in the range is a short walk from Masjid an-Nabawi.

How much more does each tier cost per night?
Comparing total prices hides what you are paying for. Per night, the gap is easier to judge.
| Package | Total per person | Price per night | Extra per night vs 3★ (7 nights) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3★, 7 nights | £590 | about £84 | — |
| 4★, 7 nights | £795 | about £114 | about £30 |
| 5★, 7 nights | £950 | about £136 | about £52 |
| 4★, 9 nights | £875 | about £97 | — |
| 4★, 10 nights | £875 | about £88 | — |
| 5★, 8 nights | £1,100 | about £138 | — |
| 5★, 10 nights | £1,050 | about £105 | — |
The pattern in the bottom half is the useful one. Flights, visa assistance and transfers cost the same however long you stay, so every extra night only adds hotel cost — and the price per night falls sharply. A 10-night 4★ trip works out at roughly the same nightly cost as a 7-night 3★, and a 10-night 5★ comes in below a 7-night 4★ per night. If you can take the extra days, a longer stay at a higher tier is often better value than a short stay at a lower one.
3★ Umrah: who it suits
A 3★ package is the sensible choice for most fit adults, and nothing about it is second-class spiritually. Our 3★ hotels list walks of under five to ten minutes, which is manageable for a healthy pilgrim who plans to stay in the mosque between prayers rather than returning to the room.
It suits you if you are travelling as a group of four sharing a room, you are comfortable walking, and you would rather spend the difference on a longer trip or on bringing another family member. It is less suited to anyone who will need to rest in the hotel between prayers, because every return trip multiplies the walk.
4★ Umrah: the middle ground
The 4★ range centres on Voco Makkah and Saja Al Madinah, with 7, 9 and 10-night options. It is where comfort and cost meet: better rooms and facilities than 3★, and some 4★ packages list the Haram as close as the doorstep.
It suits families, couples who want more space, and first-time pilgrims who are unsure how the walking will feel. It is also where the longer-stay value is strongest — the 10-night 4★ costs about £88 a night.
5★ Umrah: when it is worth it
Our 5★ packages use Jabal Omar Marriott and Address Jabal Omar in Makkah with Emaar Royal in Madinah, listing walks from the doorstep to under five minutes.
The extra money is worth it in three situations: travelling with elderly parents or anyone with limited mobility, travelling in the hottest months, and travelling in the busiest periods such as Ramadan, when crowds make every metre slower. In each case, you are buying back time and energy for worship. If none of those apply, 5★ is a comfort choice rather than a necessity — a perfectly good one, but a choice.
Which Umrah tier should you book?
| Your situation | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First Umrah, fit adults, budget matters | 3★ | Same core package, lowest cost, walks manageable |
| Family with young children | 4★ or 5★ | Children tire quickly; rest between prayers is likely |
| Elderly parents or limited mobility | 5★, or any package listing a doorstep walk | Distance matters more than the star rating |
| Travelling in summer or Ramadan | 4★ or 5★ | Heat and crowds make every walk harder |
| You can stay 10 nights | 4★ or 5★ | Price per night drops significantly on longer stays |
| Returning pilgrim wanting more time in the mosque | Closest hotel you can afford | Less time walking, more time in worship |
The rule underneath all of it: decide the walking distance you can realistically manage, then choose the lowest tier that delivers it. A well-located 4★ can be a better trip than a poorly located 5★ elsewhere.
Makkah or Madinah: where should the budget go?
If you have to prioritise, prioritise Makkah. The walk to Masjid al-Haram is the one you repeat most, the crowds are larger, and it is where most pilgrims spend the majority of their nights — four of seven nights on our standard packages. Every Madinah hotel in our range is a short walk from Masjid an-Nabawi, so the difference between tiers is felt less there.
| Package length | Nights in Makkah | Nights in Madinah |
|---|---|---|
| 7 nights | 4 | 3 |
| 8 nights (5★) | 5 | 3 |
| 9 nights (4★) | 5 | 4 |
| 10 nights (4★) | 6 | 4 |
| 10 nights (5★) | 5 | 5 |

What every tier leaves out
Whichever tier you choose, budget separately for travel insurance, lunch and dinner, optional Ziyarat tours and spending money. The meningitis ACWY vaccination is a mandatory entry requirement at every tier: GOV.UK states you must hold a valid certificate at least 10 days before arriving for Umrah. We break these costs down fully in how much Umrah costs from the UK.
Booking with confidence
GOV.UK warns that UK-based organised crime groups target people planning Umrah, and advises pilgrims to make sure their travel agent or operator is ATOL protected. Flights and flight-inclusive holidays booked with Travel Orbit are financially protected via our licensed ATOL supplier partners. We are also IATA accredited — a professional credential that allows us to issue airline tickets directly, separate from financial protection. You can read more on our about page.
If the upfront cost is what is holding you back from the tier you actually need, our Pay Later options explain how to spread it.
